The Acanthurus achilles, or Achilles Tang, is a visually stunning tang species prized for its deep black body contrasted by bright orange markings and a distinctive white spot near the tail. This XXXXL specimen is a mature individual, offering a bold and dramatic presence in any large marine aquarium.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Achilles Tangs require stable water parameters and a well-maintained environment.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally semi-aggressive, the Achilles Tang can be territorial, especially towards other surgeonfish. It is best housed singly or with other robust species in a large tank. Avoid keeping with very passive or small fish to reduce stress.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, this species thrives on a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with high-quality herbivore pellets and occasional meaty foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: Due to its active swimming behaviour and adult size, a minimum tank volume of 350 litres (approximately 90 gallons) is recommended.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate to strong lighting supports algal growth for grazing, while moderate to strong water flow mimics natural reef conditions and promotes fish health.
Placement: Provide ample open swimming space along with live rock for grazing and shelter. This tang appreciates a well-structured environment with hiding spots.
Origin: Pacific Ocean, including Hawaii and surrounding regions.
Maximum Size: Up to 23 cm (9 inches) in length.
With proper care, the Achilles Tang is a spectacular addition to a mature marine aquarium, offering both beauty and dynamic movement.
