Spirobranchus spp., commonly known as Christmas Tree Worms, are fascinating polychaete worms prized for their vibrant, spiral-shaped feeding appendages. This Extra Extra Large specimen comes attached to live rock, making it a ready addition to mature marine reef aquariums.
These worms are filter feeders, extending their colourful crowns to capture plankton and suspended particles from the water column. They contribute to the biodiversity and visual interest of reef tanks, creating natural movement and texture.
Care and Husbandry
- Lighting: Moderate lighting is sufficient, as these worms do not rely on photosynthesis but benefit from a well-lit environment to display their vivid colours.
- Water Flow: Moderate to strong water flow is recommended to ensure adequate delivery of planktonic food and to keep detritus from settling on the worm’s crowns.
- Placement: Position the rock in a stable area with good water circulation. Avoid placing too close to aggressive corals that may sting or overgrow the worm.
- Feeding: Primarily filter feeders; however, supplemental feeding with phytoplankton or liquid plankton may enhance health and colour vibrancy.
- Compatibility: Reef safe with adequate spacing. Avoid housing with fish or invertebrates known to nip or disturb polychaete worms.
Additional Information
These worms are sensitive to sudden changes in water parameters. Maintain stable conditions with regular water testing and quality maintenance. They are best suited for experienced aquarists with established reef systems.
