Scolymia australis (Green) is a captivating large polyp stony (LPS) coral known for its vibrant green coloration and distinctive fleshy polyps. Originating from the Indo-Pacific region, this species belongs to the Mussidae family and is highly sought after by marine aquarists for its striking appearance and moderate care needs.
As a medium-sized specimen, this coral typically reaches a diameter of approximately 10-15cm under optimal conditions. It thrives best in reef aquariums with stable water parameters and moderate lighting.
Care Requirements
- Lighting: Moderate lighting is ideal. LED or T5 lighting systems providing a PAR range of 50-150 are recommended to maintain vibrant colour without causing bleaching.
- Water Flow: Moderate, indirect water flow helps prevent detritus accumulation on the coral’s surface while avoiding tissue damage.
- Placement: Position the coral on the substrate or lower rockwork with adequate space around it to prevent aggression towards neighbouring corals. Ensure it is not shaded by other corals or rock structures.
Compatibility and Reef Safety
This species is reef safe with adequate spacing, but it can exhibit aggressive behaviour through sweeper tentacles, so maintain a minimum distance of 10cm from other corals to avoid stinging.
Feeding and Diet
Scolymia australis benefits from supplemental feeding with meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or specialised coral foods 1-2 times per week to promote growth and vibrant colouration.
Additional Notes
Regular monitoring of water quality, including calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium levels, is essential to support skeletal growth. This coral prefers stable temperatures between 24-27°C and salinity of 1.023-1.025 specific gravity.
