Scolymia australis (Common) is a captivating large polyp stony (LPS) coral belonging to the Mussidae family. Known for its bold colours and fleshy, rounded polyps, this medium-sized coral adds a stunning focal point to reef tanks.
Care Level: Moderate – suitable for hobbyists with some experience in LPS coral husbandry.
Lighting: Prefers moderate lighting conditions. LED or T5 lighting systems that provide a balanced spectrum are ideal. Avoid intense direct light to prevent bleaching.
Water Flow: Gentle to moderate water movement is best to ensure adequate nutrient delivery without damaging the delicate polyps.
Placement: Place on the substrate or lower rockwork with enough space around it to prevent aggression towards neighbouring corals. Maintain at least 10cm distance from other corals to avoid stinging interactions.
Diet: Primarily photosynthetic via symbiotic zooxanthellae, but benefits from supplemental feeding of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp or specialised coral foods 1-2 times per week.
Compatibility: Reef safe with caution. While generally peaceful, Scolymia australis can extend sweeper tentacles at night, so adequate spacing is essential.
Origin: Not Provided.
Maximum Size: Medium-sized, typically reaching up to 10cm in diameter.
Minimum Tank Size: 75 litres (20 gallons) recommended to maintain stable water parameters.
Regular water testing and maintenance of stable parameters including temperature (24-27°C), salinity (1.023-1.025), and calcium (400-450 ppm) will support healthy growth.
