Cynarina lacrymalis, commonly known as the Doughnut Coral, is a large polyp stony (LPS) coral prized for its vibrant colours and distinctive fleshy polyps. This large specimen offers a dramatic focal point in mature reef aquariums.
Lighting: Moderate to low lighting is preferred to prevent bleaching and stress. LED or T5 lighting systems with adjustable intensity work well.
Water Flow: Low to moderate water flow is ideal to ensure the coral’s delicate polyps are not damaged while allowing sufficient nutrient exchange.
Placement: Position Cynarina lacrymalis on sandy substrate or flat rock surfaces in the lower to middle regions of the tank. Ensure ample space around it, as its fleshy polyps can extend and may sting neighbouring corals.
Diet: While photosynthetic, this coral benefits from supplemental feeding of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or specialised coral foods 2-3 times weekly to promote growth and vibrancy.
Compatibility: Reef safe with caution; avoid placing near aggressive corals to prevent stinging. Suitable for established reef tanks with stable water parameters.
Care Level: Moderate. Best suited for aquarists with some experience in maintaining stable water quality and lighting conditions.
