Cycloseris spp. (Orange) is a captivating large polyp stony (LPS) coral belonging to the Fungiidae family, known for its distinctive disc-like shape and vibrant orange coloration. This coral is a favourite among marine aquarium hobbyists who appreciate its unique appearance and moderate care requirements.
Lighting: Cycloseris spp. thrives under moderate lighting conditions. LED or T5 lighting systems providing a PAR range of approximately 50-150 are ideal to maintain its vivid colour without causing stress.
Water Flow: Gentle to moderate water flow is recommended to ensure adequate nutrient exchange while preventing tissue damage. Avoid strong currents that may cause the coral to retract or become damaged.
Placement: Position this coral on sandy or rubble substrate where it can fully expand. It is a free-living coral and does not require attachment to rockwork. Ensure adequate spacing from neighbouring corals to prevent aggressive interactions, as Cycloseris spp. can extend sweeper tentacles.
Diet: While photosynthetic, Cycloseris spp. benefits from supplemental feeding of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or specialised coral foods 1-2 times per week to promote growth and vibrancy.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: This coral is reef safe with adequate spacing. It may exhibit aggression towards nearby corals, so maintain a minimum distance of 5-10 cm from other sessile invertebrates.
Care Level: Moderate – suitable for aquarists with some experience in maintaining LPS corals.
Additional Notes: Cycloseris spp. are free-living and may move slightly on the substrate. Handle with care to avoid damaging the delicate tissue. Regular water quality monitoring is essential to maintain stable parameters.
