Catalaphyllia jardinei, commonly known as Jardine’s Brain Coral, is a captivating large polyp stony (LPS) coral prized for its fleshy, tentacle-like polyps and vibrant colours. The XXXL variant represents a mature, sizeable specimen that can become a striking focal point in a well-established marine aquarium.
Lighting: Moderate to high lighting is recommended, ideally provided by LED or T5 fixtures designed for reef aquariums. Avoid sudden intense light exposure to prevent bleaching.
Water Flow: Moderate, indirect water flow is optimal to ensure the coral’s tentacles can extend fully without being damaged by strong currents.
Placement: Position Catalaphyllia jardinei on the substrate or lower rockwork where it has ample space to expand. Maintain good spacing from neighbouring corals to prevent aggressive interactions, as this species can extend sweeper tentacles.
Diet: While photosynthetic, this coral benefits from supplemental feeding of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or specialised coral foods 1-2 times per week to promote growth and vibrancy.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: Reef safe with caution; it can coexist with many reef inhabitants but requires adequate spacing to avoid coral warfare.
Care Level: Intermediate to advanced. Requires stable water parameters and attentive husbandry.
Minimum Tank Size: 150 litres (40 gallons) or larger to accommodate its growth and ensure stable conditions.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 40 cm in diameter in aquarium settings.
