Turbinaria peltata is a captivating large polyp stony (LPS) coral known for its unique plate-like structure and textured surface. Originating from tropical Indo-Pacific reefs, this species adds impressive dimension and movement to reef aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate – suitable for aquarists with some experience in LPS coral husbandry.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate lighting is recommended. LED or T5 lighting systems providing a PAR range of approximately 100-200 µmol/m²/s support healthy growth without causing bleaching.
Water Flow: Moderate, indirect water flow is ideal. Strong currents may damage the delicate polyps, while stagnant water can lead to detritus accumulation.
Placement: Position Turbinaria peltata on a stable rock or substrate area with enough space to expand its plates without shading neighbouring corals. It is best placed mid to lower levels of the aquarium.
Compatibility: Reef safe with adequate spacing from other corals to prevent aggression and ensure optimal health. It may extend sweeper tentacles at night, so maintain a minimum of 10cm clearance.
Diet: Primarily photosynthetic via symbiotic zooxanthellae but benefits from occasional feeding of planktonic foods such as phytoplankton or specialised coral foods.
Minimum Tank Size: 90 litres (approximately 20 gallons) to provide stable water parameters and sufficient space.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Medium-sized colonies can reach up to 20cm in diameter under optimal conditions.
Regular water quality monitoring and stable parameters are essential for maintaining vibrant colouration and growth. Avoid rapid changes in lighting or water flow to reduce stress.
