Turbinaria mesenterina is a large, plate-forming LPS coral belonging to the family Dendrophylliidae. Known for its distinctive, layered growth and often vibrant hues, this coral adds impressive structure and texture to mature reef aquariums.
Lighting Requirements: Moderate to high lighting is recommended to support healthy growth and maintain vibrant colours. LED or T5 lighting systems that provide a balanced spectrum work well.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow is ideal to ensure adequate nutrient exchange without causing tissue damage. Avoid strong direct currents that may stress the coral.
Placement: Position Turbinaria mesenterina on stable rockwork in the mid to lower sections of the aquarium. Provide ample space around it to prevent aggression or shading of neighbouring corals, as it can extend its polyps and sweepers.
Care Level: Suitable for intermediate to advanced hobbyists due to its size and specific husbandry needs.
Diet: Primarily photosynthetic via symbiotic zooxanthellae, but benefits from occasional feeding of planktonic foods such as phytoplankton or specialised coral foods.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: Reef safe with adequate spacing. It may exhibit aggressive behaviour towards nearby corals through sweeper tentacles, so maintain a respectful distance.
Additional Notes: Regular water quality monitoring and stable parameters are essential for long-term health. This coral prefers stable calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium levels to support its skeletal growth.
