The Tear Drop Clam (Tridacna maxima) is a popular species of giant clam prized for its vivid mantle colours and relatively compact size, making it a desirable invertebrate for marine reef aquariums.
At approximately 8cm, this clam is suitable for established reef tanks with stable water parameters. It thrives under moderate to high lighting, benefiting from strong actinic or metal halide lighting to support its symbiotic zooxanthellae algae.
Water flow should be moderate and indirect to prevent sediment accumulation on the clam’s mantle while ensuring adequate oxygenation. Placement near the substrate or on rockwork in a well-lit area is ideal.
Feeding is generally not required as Tridacna maxima relies primarily on photosynthesis, but occasional supplementation with phytoplankton or specialised clam foods can promote health and growth.
This species is reef safe and compatible with most peaceful tank inhabitants; however, care should be taken to avoid predatory fish or invertebrates that may nip at its mantle.
Regular monitoring of water quality, especially calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium, is essential to support shell growth and overall clam health.
