Elysia crispata, also known as the Lettuce Sea Slug, is a captivating marine invertebrate admired for its vibrant, ruffled parapodia that resemble lettuce leaves. This species is a sacoglossan sea slug capable of incorporating chloroplasts from algae into its tissues, allowing it to photosynthesise and supplement its diet.
Care and Husbandry: Elysia crispata requires a well-established, mature marine aquarium with stable water parameters. It thrives best in tanks of at least 30 gallons (approximately 114 litres) to provide adequate space and water quality. Maintain temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, and stable pH around 8.1-8.4.
Feeding can be challenging as this species primarily consumes specific algae, such as Bryopsis spp. and other filamentous algae. Supplementary feeding with macroalgae may be necessary if natural algae growth is insufficient. Avoid overfeeding to maintain water quality.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: Elysia crispata is generally peaceful and reef safe, posing no threat to corals or other invertebrates. It is compatible with most peaceful tank mates but should be housed away from predatory fish or invertebrates that may view it as prey.
Placement and Environment: Provide ample live rock or algae-covered surfaces to encourage grazing. Moderate water flow is preferred to mimic natural conditions without stressing the slug.
