Overview: Culcita novaeguineae, commonly referred to as the Cushion Starfish, is a unique and visually captivating starfish species prized in marine aquariums. Its thick, pentagonal body and vibrant colours make it a standout addition to mature reef tanks.
Care Level: Moderate. This species requires stable water parameters and attentive feeding to thrive.
Feeding: Unlike many starfish, Culcita novaeguineae is primarily carnivorous and scavenges on small invertebrates, detritus, and leftover meaty foods. Regular feeding with finely chopped marine foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or specialised invertebrate pellets is recommended to maintain health.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: Generally reef safe with caution. While Culcita novaeguineae coexists peacefully with most reef inhabitants, it may prey on slow-moving or sessile invertebrates such as corals or small molluscs if underfed. It is best housed in a mature reef aquarium with ample natural food sources and minimal vulnerable species.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 100 litres is advised to provide sufficient space and stable water quality. The Cushion Starfish prefers moderate water flow to avoid stress but benefits from good circulation to ensure oxygenation and waste removal.
Placement: Place on sandy or rubble substrate where it can move freely and forage. Avoid placing near delicate corals or slow-moving invertebrates to reduce predation risk.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, and low nutrient levels.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm diameter.
