Panulirus versicolor, commonly known as the Painted Spiny Lobster, is a visually stunning crustacean prized in marine aquariums for its vibrant colours and active behaviour. This tiny variant is suitable for experienced hobbyists who can provide the appropriate environment and diet.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced care is recommended due to their specific feeding and habitat needs.
Feeding: Panulirus versicolor is primarily carnivorous and scavenges for meaty foods such as chopped seafood, molluscs, and specialised crustacean pellets. Feeding should be done in the evening or at night when they are most active.
Compatibility: Generally peaceful with other invertebrates but may prey on small, slow-moving tank mates. Avoid housing with very small or delicate species. Suitable for reef tanks with caution.
Reef Safety: With Caution – While generally reef safe, they may occasionally disturb sessile invertebrates or small fish.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended to provide ample hiding places and roaming space. Provide plenty of live rock for shelter and crevices to mimic their natural habitat.
Lighting & Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. Moderate water flow is preferred to simulate natural reef conditions without stressing the lobster.
Placement: Place in a well-established reef or marine tank with stable water parameters. Ensure plenty of hiding spots to reduce stress and encourage natural behaviour.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length when fully grown.
