Panulirus spp. are a genus of spiny lobsters prized for their striking appearance and intriguing behaviour in marine aquariums. This listing features medium-sized specimens, suitable for hobbyists with some experience in maintaining marine invertebrates.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced care is recommended due to their specific dietary and environmental needs.
Diet: Panulirus spp. are omnivorous scavengers. They thrive on a varied diet including meaty foods such as chopped seafood, molluscs, crustaceans, and specialised invertebrate pellets. Feeding should be regular but not excessive to maintain water quality.
Compatibility: These lobsters can be territorial and may prey on smaller invertebrates or slow-moving tank mates. It is advisable to keep them with robust fish and invertebrates that can tolerate their presence. Avoid housing with very small or delicate species.
Reef Safety: With caution. While generally reef safe, Panulirus spp. may occasionally damage sessile invertebrates or corals if food is scarce.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 120 litres is recommended to provide adequate space and hiding places. Provide plenty of live rock and crevices for shelter, as these lobsters are nocturnal and require secure daytime refuges.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 22-26°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Lighting: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient; no special lighting requirements.
Placement: Position rockwork to create caves and overhangs for shelter. Ensure the tank is well-established to support their scavenging behaviour.
Panulirus spp. lobsters add dynamic interest and natural pest control benefits to mature marine aquariums when cared for properly.
