Pholidichthys leucotaenia, often referred to as the Convict Blenny, is a distinctive and intriguing marine fish prized by advanced aquarists. Its striking black and white striped pattern makes it a standout addition to any large marine aquarium.
This species is known for its burrowing habits, often creating extensive tunnel systems within live rock or sandy substrates. Providing a deep sand bed and ample live rock is essential to accommodate this natural behaviour.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This fish requires stable water parameters and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in a suitably large tank.
Diet: Omnivorous. Accepts a variety of meaty foods including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality prepared marine fish foods. Regular feeding is important to maintain health.
Minimum Tank Size: Due to its active burrowing and size, a minimum of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended.
Reef Safe: With Caution. While generally reef compatible, the burrowing behaviour may disturb corals or invertebrates in the substrate.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting and gentle to moderate water flow are suitable, mimicking its natural reef environment.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock and a deep sand bed to facilitate natural burrowing and hiding behaviour.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length.
