The Aulostomus chinensis, or Chinese Trumpetfish, is a striking and unusual marine fish prized by advanced hobbyists for its distinctive elongated body and stealthy predation tactics. This large species can grow to a considerable size, requiring a well-established aquarium with ample swimming space.
Care Level: Due to its specialised diet and size, the Chinese Trumpetfish is recommended for experienced marine aquarists. It is a slow-moving ambush predator that primarily feeds on small fish and crustaceans, so tankmates should be chosen carefully to avoid predation.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but predatory, Aulostomus chinensis is best kept with larger, non-aggressive fish that are not small enough to be considered prey. Avoid housing with small or slow-moving species.
Diet: Carnivorous, requiring a diet of live or frozen meaty foods such as small fish, shrimp, and crustaceans. Regular feeding with high-quality marine carnivore diets is essential to maintain health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 300 litres is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space. The aquarium should have plenty of hiding places and open areas to mimic its natural ambush hunting environment.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Reef Safety: With Caution – may prey on small invertebrates and fish, so not recommended for reef tanks with small or delicate inhabitants.
