The Zebrias fasciatus is a fascinating flatfish species prized for its distinctive striped pattern and unique body shape. As a benthic predator, it spends much of its time camouflaged on sandy or muddy substrates, making it an intriguing addition to a marine aquarium.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a suitably sized aquarium to accommodate its size and behaviour.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but predatory towards small fish and invertebrates. Best housed with larger, non-aggressive tank mates. Avoid keeping with very small or slow-moving species that may be seen as prey.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as live or frozen crustaceans, small fish, and specialised sinking pellets or frozen preparations designed for carnivorous marine fish.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and substrate area. A fine sandy substrate is essential to allow natural burrowing and resting behaviour.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow to mimic natural habitat.
Placement: Provide plenty of open sandy areas for resting and hunting. Include rockwork or caves for shelter but ensure substrate remains accessible.
Reef Safety: With Caution. Due to its predatory nature, it may consume small invertebrates and fish in reef setups.
Origin: Not Provided.
Maximum Size: Up to 25 cm in length.
