Equetus lanceolatus, commonly known as the Jackknife Fish, is a visually captivating species prized for its distinctive black and white patterning and elegant dorsal fin. This grunt is best suited for marine aquarists with some experience due to its specific care needs and temperament.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a well-maintained aquarium.
Temperament and Compatibility: Equetus lanceolatus is generally peaceful but can be shy and may become territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. It is best kept singly or in a large tank with plenty of hiding spaces. Avoid aggressive tank mates to reduce stress.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including high-quality frozen or live meaty foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Regular feeding 2-3 times daily is recommended to maintain health.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is advised to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting and moderate water flow replicate their natural reef environment. Avoid strong currents that may stress the fish.
Placement: Provide plenty of rockwork and caves to mimic natural hiding spots. This encourages natural behaviour and reduces stress.
Origin: Western Atlantic, including the Caribbean Sea.
Maximum Size: Up to 25 cm (10 inches) in length.
Equetus lanceolatus is a stunning addition to a mature marine aquarium, offering both beauty and interesting behaviour. Proper care and tank conditions are essential for its long-term health and well-being.
