The Arothron nigropunctatus, or Blackspotted Puffer, is a visually stunning marine fish prized for its distinctive black spots and robust body. This medium-sized pufferfish can grow up to 50cm in length and is best suited to large, well-established marine aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a varied diet to thrive.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can become territorial, especially towards other puffers or slow-moving fish. Not recommended for reef tanks due to potential coral nipping. Compatible with larger, robust tankmates that can tolerate its inquisitive nature.
Diet: Carnivorous – feeds on a variety of meaty foods including molluscs, crustaceans, and prepared frozen foods. Regular feeding of hard-shelled foods is essential to help wear down their continuously growing teeth.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 200 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour. A secure lid is essential as puffers are known jumpers.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity 1.020-1.025, and pH 8.1-8.4.
Reef Safety: With caution – may nip at corals and invertebrates, so best kept in fish-only or mixed species tanks without delicate corals.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
