The Xanthichthys ringens, commonly known as the Grey Triggerfish, is a captivating addition to any large marine aquarium. Recognised for its robust body and subtle grey-blue colouring, this species offers both visual appeal and an engaging temperament.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires a well-established aquarium with stable water parameters and ample swimming space.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful compared to other triggerfish, Xanthichthys ringens can coexist with a variety of tank mates but may show territorial behaviour towards smaller or more timid fish. It is best housed with similarly sized or larger species to avoid stress or aggression.
Diet: Omnivorous. Provide a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, krill, and chopped seafood, supplemented with high-quality marine pellets or flakes to ensure balanced nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: Due to its potential size and active swimming habits, a minimum tank volume of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide sufficient space.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While not typically destructive to corals, this species may disturb invertebrates or small reef inhabitants. Careful monitoring and appropriate tank setup are advised.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is suitable. Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef currents helps maintain health and activity.
Placement: Mid to lower levels of the aquarium, where it can swim freely and find shelter among rockwork.
Origin: Not Provided.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches).
