Pterois radiata, commonly known as the Radiata Lionfish, is a visually stunning scorpionfish species prized for its elegant, elongated fin rays and striking banded pattern. This small-sized specimen is ideal for marine enthusiasts with experience in keeping venomous fish.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Due to its venomous spines and specific husbandry needs, it is best suited for aquarists familiar with scorpionfish care.
Temperament and Compatibility: The Radiata Lionfish is generally solitary and can be territorial. It is predatory and may consume smaller tankmates, so compatibility with similarly sized or larger, robust fish is recommended. Avoid housing with small or slow-moving species.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as live or frozen crustaceans, small fish, and shrimp. Regular feeding 2-3 times per week is advised to maintain health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended to provide adequate swimming space and territory. The aquarium should have plenty of live rock for hiding and ambush hunting.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.020-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Reef Safety: No. Due to its predatory nature and venomous spines, it is not considered reef safe.
Handling: Exercise caution when performing maintenance or feeding, as the spines deliver venom that can cause painful stings.
