Salarias fasciatus, commonly known as the Jewelled Blenny, is a popular choice among marine aquarium enthusiasts for its vibrant appearance and beneficial algae-grazing behaviour. This species is well-suited to reef tanks and is generally peaceful, making it compatible with a wide range of tank mates.
Care Level: Easy to moderate. This blenny adapts well to captive conditions but benefits from stable water parameters and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament: Peaceful and territorial towards its own species. It is best kept singly or in a large tank with ample hiding spaces to reduce territorial disputes.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, Salarias fasciatus thrives on a diet rich in algae. Supplement with high-quality marine algae sheets, spirulina, and vegetable-based pellets. Occasional meaty foods can be offered but should not dominate the diet.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 75 litres (20 gallons) is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and grazing surfaces.
Reef Safety: Yes, this species is considered reef safe and will not harm corals or invertebrates.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting to support algae growth and moderate water flow to mimic natural reef conditions are ideal.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock with crevices and algae growth for grazing and shelter. This encourages natural behaviour and reduces stress.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 12 cm (4.7 inches).
