Pomacanthus maculosus, commonly known as the Yellowbar Angelfish, is a visually captivating species prized by marine aquarium enthusiasts. This small specimen displays the characteristic bold yellow bar across its body, contrasting with deep blue and black hues.
Care Level: This species is best suited for advanced hobbyists due to its specific dietary and environmental needs.
Temperament: Generally semi-aggressive, the Yellowbar Angelfish can be territorial, especially towards conspecifics or similar species. It is recommended to keep only one individual per tank or provide ample space to reduce aggression.
Diet: Omnivorous, requiring a varied diet including marine algae, sponges, and high-quality meaty foods such as mysis shrimp and finely chopped seafood. Regular feeding of prepared angelfish diets will help maintain vibrant coloration and health.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 250 litres (approximately 65 gallons) is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and territory.
Water Conditions: Stable marine parameters with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025, and pH 8.1-8.4 are ideal.
Compatibility: Suitable with other robust fish species but caution is advised when housing with smaller, timid fish. Not reef safe as it may nip at corals and sessile invertebrates.
Origin: Native to the western Indian Ocean, including the Red Sea and Arabian Gulf.
Maximum Size: Can grow up to 35 cm (14 inches) in captivity.
