Pomacanthus chrysurus, commonly known as the Goldtail Angelfish, is a visually stunning species prized by marine aquarium enthusiasts. This adult specimen displays the characteristic bright yellow tail and contrasting dark body, making it a standout in any large marine setup.
Care Level: This species requires an intermediate to advanced level of care due to its size and specific husbandry needs. It is best suited for experienced aquarists.
Temperament and Compatibility: Pomacanthus chrysurus is semi-aggressive and may show territorial behaviour, especially towards other angelfish or similar-shaped species. It is recommended to keep this fish singly or as a mated pair in a spacious tank. Compatibility with peaceful community fish is generally good, but caution should be exercised with smaller, timid species.
Diet: This angelfish is omnivorous and thrives on a varied diet including high-quality marine angelfish pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, spirulina, and marine algae. Regular feeding of vegetable matter is essential to maintain vibrant colouration and health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 250 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial aggression. The aquarium should be well-established with plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, and salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG. Moderate water flow and good filtration are essential to support this species’ health.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. Pomacanthus chrysurus may nip at corals and sessile invertebrates, so it is not considered fully reef safe. Suitable for fish-only or fish-plus-live-rock systems.
