Pomacanthus chrysurus, commonly known as the juvenile Yellowtail Angelfish, is a captivating addition to any large marine aquarium. This juvenile specimen displays vivid blue and yellow markings that will mature into a striking adult pattern.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive. Suitable for experienced keepers who can manage territorial behaviour, especially with other angelfish.
Diet: Omnivorous. Feed a varied diet including marine algae, spirulina, mysis shrimp, and high-quality prepared foods to ensure optimal health.
Minimum Tank Size: 250 litres (approximately 65 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and territory.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient; no special lighting needed.
Water Flow: Moderate water movement mimicking natural reef environments is ideal.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Avoid overcrowding to reduce stress.
Origin: Western Indian Ocean, including the coasts of East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.
Maximum Size: Up to 35 cm (14 inches) in length when fully grown.
This species is not reef safe due to its tendency to nip at corals and sessile invertebrates. It is best kept in fish-only or fish-plus-live rock setups.
Additional Notes: Juveniles have different colouration from adults, making them a visually interesting choice for collectors. Regular water changes and a varied diet will promote vibrant colours and longevity.
