Chaetodontoplus septentrionalis is a visually stunning large angelfish species native to the northwestern Pacific Ocean. Its vibrant colouration and elegant swimming behaviour make it a prized addition to mature marine aquariums.
Care Level: This species requires an experienced aquarist due to its size and specific care needs. It thrives best in well-established tanks with stable water parameters.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally semi-aggressive, Chaetodontoplus septentrionalis can be territorial, especially towards conspecifics or similar angelfish species. It is best housed singly or in a large aquarium with ample hiding spaces. Compatible with other robust fish species but caution is advised with smaller, timid fish.
Diet: Omnivorous, this angelfish benefits from a varied diet including high-quality marine angelfish pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and marine algae. Supplementation with sponge-based foods is recommended to mimic natural feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 250 litres (approximately 65 gallons) is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and territory.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is suitable. Moderate water flow replicates natural reef conditions and supports overall health.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and shelter. Position the fish in a well-decorated area with caves and crevices to reduce stress.
Origin: Native to the northwestern Pacific, including waters around Japan and Korea.
Maximum Size: Can grow up to approximately 30 cm (12 inches) in length.
