The Sailfin Tang (Zebrasoma veliferum) is a visually impressive tang species recognised by its tall, sail-like dorsal fin and striking colouration. Native to the Indo-Pacific region, this species is a favourite among marine aquarium enthusiasts for its active swimming behaviour and algae-grazing habits.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. The Sailfin Tang requires stable water parameters and a spacious environment to thrive.
Temperament: Generally semi-aggressive. It can be territorial, especially towards other tangs or similar-shaped fish, so careful consideration is needed when housing multiple surgeonfish.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous. Provide a varied diet rich in marine algae, seaweed sheets (nori), and specialised tang pellets to maintain optimal health and vibrant colour.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to allow ample swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While generally reef safe, the Sailfin Tang may nip at soft corals or clam mantles, so monitor behaviour closely in reef setups.
Lighting & Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate to strong water flow replicate natural reef conditions and support healthy algae growth for grazing.
Placement: Best kept singly or in a large tank with ample hiding spots and open swimming areas. Avoid housing with other tangs unless the aquarium is very large and territories can be established.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 45 cm (18 inches) in length.
Providing a well-maintained environment with stable water parameters, a balanced diet, and sufficient space will ensure your Sailfin Tang remains a vibrant and active addition to your marine aquarium.
