The Zebrasoma gemmatum, commonly referred to as the Gem Tang, is a captivating species of tang distinguished by its unique spotted pattern and elegant body shape. This large tang is a prized addition to mature marine aquariums, offering both beauty and a generally peaceful temperament.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-established tank.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards other tangs, especially conspecifics or similar-shaped species.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous. Provide a varied diet rich in marine algae, seaweed sheets (nori), and high-quality herbivore pellets or flakes. Supplement with occasional meaty foods such as mysis shrimp to ensure balanced nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour.
Reef Compatibility: Yes, with caution. Zebrasoma gemmatum is generally reef safe but may nip at certain sessile invertebrates or soft corals if underfed.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable. Ensure good water quality with stable parameters.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Avoid housing with aggressive tangs or similarly shaped species to minimise territorial disputes.
Origin: South African waters.
Maximum Size: Up to 25 cm (10 inches) in length.
With proper care, the Gem Tang is a stunning and rewarding species that adds unique visual interest to large marine aquariums.
