The Naso elegans, commonly known as the Elegant Unicornfish, is a visually stunning tang species prized for its vibrant colours and graceful swimming. This medium-sized marine fish is a peaceful addition to well-established reef or fish-only aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water parameters and a spacious environment.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but may show territorial behaviour towards conspecifics or similar tang species.
Diet: Herbivorous. Primarily feeds on marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with high-quality dried seaweed sheets and vegetable-based marine fish foods to ensure optimal health.
Minimum Tank Size: Recommended minimum of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and reduce stress.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While generally reef safe, Naso elegans may nip at soft corals or clam mantles, so monitor behaviour closely in reef setups.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable to mimic natural reef conditions.
Placement: Mid to upper water column swimmers. Provide plenty of open swimming space along with live rock for grazing.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 35 cm (14 inches) in captivity.
When introducing Naso elegans to your aquarium, ensure a gradual acclimation process and maintain excellent water quality. Regular feeding of algae-based foods will support vibrant colouration and overall health.
