The Acanthurus mata, commonly known as the mata tang, is a visually striking surgeonfish prized for its vibrant blue and yellow markings and dynamic swimming behaviour. This extra large specimen is suitable for experienced marine aquarists who can provide ample space and stable water conditions.
Temperament and Compatibility: The mata tang is generally semi-aggressive and territorial, especially towards conspecifics and similar tang species. It is best housed singly or in a very large aquarium with plenty of hiding spaces and swimming room. Compatible tankmates include other robust, non-aggressive fish species. Avoid keeping with very small or timid fish to prevent stress.
Diet: Acanthurus mata is primarily herbivorous, requiring a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with high-quality marine flake or pellet foods, spirulina, and occasional meaty treats such as mysis shrimp to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: Due to its active nature and potential adult size of up to 40 cm (approximate), a minimum tank size of 250 litres is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space. Maintain excellent water quality with stable parameters: temperature 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, and salinity 1.020-1.025 SG.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, the mata tang may nip at some sessile invertebrates or soft corals. Monitor behaviour closely in reef setups.
