The Powder Blue Tang (Acanthurus leucosternon) is a visually stunning marine fish prized for its vibrant blue body, yellow dorsal fin, and distinctive black face mask. This large tang is a popular choice among experienced marine aquarium enthusiasts due to its active swimming behaviour and striking appearance.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and a well-established tank.
Temperament: Generally semi-aggressive. It can be territorial, especially towards other tangs or similar-shaped fish. Best kept singly or in a very large aquarium with ample hiding spaces.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous. Provide a varied diet rich in marine algae and seaweed, supplemented with high-quality herbivore pellets and occasional meaty foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to allow sufficient swimming space and reduce territorial aggression.
Reef Safety: With caution. While generally reef safe, it may nip at some sessile invertebrates or coral polyps, especially if underfed.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef aquarium lighting and moderate to strong water flow to mimic natural reef conditions.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding. Position in the mid to upper levels of the aquarium where it can swim freely.
Origin: Indian Ocean, including the reefs around the Maldives and Sri Lanka.
Maximum Size: Up to 25 cm (10 inches) in length.
Regular water changes and maintaining excellent water quality are essential for the health of this species. Avoid sudden changes in water parameters and provide a peaceful environment to reduce stress.
