The Acanthurus bariene, commonly known as the Bariene Surgeonfish, is a visually captivating tang prized for its unique colouration and active swimming behaviour. This small-sized specimen is best suited for advanced marine aquarium enthusiasts due to its specific care requirements.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water parameters and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament: Generally semi-aggressive; can be territorial especially towards conspecifics or similar tang species. Best kept singly or in a large tank with ample swimming space.
Diet: Herbivorous. Needs a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed, supplemented with high-quality herbivore flakes or pellets. Regular feeding of dried seaweed (nori) is recommended to maintain optimal health.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to provide sufficient swimming room and reduce territorial behaviour.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient; no special lighting needs.
Water Flow: Moderate to strong water movement mimics natural reef currents and supports the fish’s active lifestyle.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Ensure open swimming areas to accommodate its active nature.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length.
Reef Safety: With Caution. May nip at coral polyps or sessile invertebrates; not recommended for delicate reef tanks.
