The Acanthurus bahianus, or Atlantic Surgeonfish, is a medium-sized tang native to the western Atlantic Ocean. Known for its bold colours and active swimming behaviour, this species adds dynamic movement and visual interest to larger marine aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water conditions and ample swimming space.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive. It can be territorial, especially towards other tangs, so careful consideration of tank mates is essential.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous. Provide a varied diet rich in marine algae, seaweed sheets, and supplemented with meaty foods such as mysis or brine shrimp to ensure balanced nutrition.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to accommodate its active swimming and territorial behaviour.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While generally reef safe, it may nip at certain sessile invertebrates or corals if underfed or stressed.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate to strong water flow are recommended to mimic natural reef conditions.
Placement: Provide plenty of open swimming areas along with rockwork for grazing and hiding. Avoid overcrowding to reduce stress and aggression.
Origin: Western Atlantic Ocean.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length.
