Scatophagus argus, commonly known as the Spotted Scat or Batfish, is a striking marine fish prized for its unique spotted pattern and peaceful nature. Our stock is tank-bred, ensuring healthier specimens better adapted to aquarium life.
Care Level: Moderate – suitable for aquarists with some marine experience.
Temperament: Generally peaceful and social, Scatophagus argus can be kept in groups or with other non-aggressive tank mates. Avoid housing with very small or timid fish as they may be outcompeted for food.
Diet: Omnivorous. They thrive on a varied diet including high-quality marine pellets, flakes, frozen foods such as brine shrimp and mysis, and vegetable matter like seaweed or spirulina.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended for small to medium individuals to provide ample swimming space and maintain water quality.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 22-26°C, pH 8.1-8.4, and salinity 1.020-1.025 SG.
Lighting & Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef environments is ideal.
Placement: Mid to upper levels of the aquarium where they can swim freely. Provide hiding spots with rockwork or artificial caves to reduce stress.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While generally peaceful, Scatophagus argus may nip at soft corals or sessile invertebrates, so they are best kept in fish-only or mixed non-reef setups.
Origin: Not Provided (Tank-Bred)
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in captivity, though our specimens are small to medium-sized.
