Pomacanthus maculosus, commonly referred to as the White Bar Angelfish, is a captivating marine species prized for its bold white vertical bar and striking colouration. This large, tank-bred specimen is an excellent choice for marine enthusiasts seeking a showpiece fish with a manageable temperament.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally semi-aggressive, the White Bar Angelfish can be territorial, especially towards conspecifics or similar species. It is best housed singly or with other robust tank mates. Avoid keeping with very small or passive fish to prevent stress or aggression.
Diet: Omnivorous. Provide a varied diet including high-quality marine angelfish pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, spirulina, and marine algae. Supplement with sponge-based foods to mimic natural feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 250 litres (approximately 65 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territories.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is suitable. Moderate water flow is preferred to simulate natural reef conditions without causing stress.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Ensure the aquarium is mature with stable water chemistry.
Origin: Native to the Red Sea and adjacent waters.
Maximum Size: Up to 40 cm (approximately 16 inches) in captivity.
Reef Safety: With caution. May nip at sessile invertebrates such as corals and clams; not recommended for delicate reef tanks.
