The Acanthastrea lordhowensis (Red) is a stunning large polyp stony (LPS) coral prized for its vivid red hues and fleshy polyps. Originating from the Indo-Pacific region, this species belongs to the Mussidae family and is a popular choice for marine reef aquariums due to its striking appearance and moderate care needs.
Lighting: Moderate lighting is recommended, such as T5 fluorescents or LED systems with adjustable intensity. Avoid placing under intense direct light to prevent bleaching.
Water Flow: Provide gentle to moderate water flow to ensure adequate nutrient delivery while avoiding tissue damage from strong currents.
Placement: Position the coral on the substrate or lower to middle sections of the rockwork, allowing enough space from neighbouring corals to prevent aggressive interactions. This species can extend sweeper tentacles, so maintain at least 5-10 cm distance from other corals.
Feeding: While photosynthetic, Acanthastrea lordhowensis benefits from supplemental feeding of meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or specialised coral foods 1-2 times per week to promote growth and vibrant colouration.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable reef conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, and low nutrient levels.
Due to its moderate care level, this coral is best suited for aquarists with some experience in maintaining LPS corals. Regular monitoring and maintenance will ensure a healthy, thriving specimen that adds bold colour and texture to your reef display.
