Discosoma spp. (Special Selected) are a group of medium-sized soft corals commonly known as mushroom corals. These corals are popular in the marine aquarium hobby due to their striking colours and relatively straightforward care requirements.
As soft corals, Discosoma spp. lack a hard skeleton, making them flexible and resilient. They are suitable for a variety of reef setups, especially for hobbyists seeking vibrant and hardy corals.
Care and Husbandry
- Lighting: Moderate lighting is ideal. Too intense lighting may cause bleaching, while too low light can inhibit growth.
- Water Flow: Gentle to moderate water flow is preferred to keep the coral healthy without causing tissue damage.
- Placement: Place on rockwork or substrate where they have room to expand. Ensure adequate spacing from other corals to prevent aggression or overgrowth.
- Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity around 1.025 SG, and low nutrient levels.
Compatibility and Reef Safety
Discosoma spp. are generally reef safe with adequate spacing. They coexist well with most reef inhabitants but can overgrow neighbouring corals if crowded.
Additional Notes
These corals benefit from occasional feeding of fine particulate foods or coral-specific supplements but primarily rely on photosynthesis via their symbiotic zooxanthellae.
