Euphyllia cristata, commonly known as the Gold Torch coral, is a captivating large polyp stony (LPS) coral prized for its vibrant golden tentacles and unique branching structure. This small specimen is perfect for marine aquarium hobbyists looking to add dynamic movement and colour to their reef tanks.
Lighting: Euphyllia cristata thrives under moderate to high lighting conditions. LED, T5, or metal halide lighting systems that provide a PAR range of approximately 100-250 are ideal to maintain healthy growth and vibrant coloration.
Water Flow: Moderate, indirect water flow is recommended to ensure the coral’s delicate tentacles can extend fully without damage. Avoid strong direct currents that may cause tissue recession.
Placement: Position the Gold Torch coral in a location with ample space around it to prevent aggressive sweeper tentacles from stinging neighbouring corals. Mid to lower reef levels are suitable, depending on lighting intensity.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: This coral is generally reef safe with adequate spacing from other corals to avoid conflict. It can coexist with a variety of peaceful reef inhabitants but should be monitored to prevent encroachment on nearby corals.
Care Level: Moderate care is required, making it suitable for aquarists with some experience in maintaining LPS corals.
Diet: Primarily photosynthetic via symbiotic zooxanthellae, but benefits from occasional feeding of meaty foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, or specialised coral foods to promote growth and health.
Additional Notes: Maintain stable water parameters typical for reef aquaria: temperature 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, and low nutrient levels. Regular monitoring and water changes will support optimal coral health.
