The Hogfish (Lachnolaimus maximus) is a large, visually impressive wrasse native to the western Atlantic Ocean. Recognisable by its distinctive elongated snout and bold colouration, this species is a fascinating addition to a suitably sized marine aquarium.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Hogfish require stable water conditions and a large tank due to their size and active nature.
Temperament: Generally semi-aggressive. They can be territorial, especially towards smaller, more passive fish.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including meaty foods such as crustaceans, molluscs, and high-quality frozen or live marine preparations.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 300 litres (approximately 80 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient; no special lighting needs.
Water Flow: Moderate water movement mimicking natural reef environments is ideal.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for hiding and foraging. Ensure the tank has secure lids as Hogfish are known to be jumpers.
Origin: Western Atlantic Ocean, including the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico.
Maximum Size: Up to 90 cm (35 inches) in the wild; aquarium specimens typically smaller but still require large tanks.
Due to their size and temperament, Hogfish are best suited to experienced marine aquarists with large, well-established tanks. They are not reef safe as they may prey on invertebrates and smaller fish.
