Hologymnosus annulatus is a visually stunning wrasse species prized for its vibrant colouration and dynamic swimming behaviour. This medium-sized wrasse is best suited to experienced marine aquarists due to its active nature and specific care requirements.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced care is recommended. This species thrives in a well-established aquarium with stable water parameters.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial, especially towards other wrasses or similar-shaped fish. It is advisable to keep only one individual per tank unless the aquarium is very large.
Diet: Carnivorous; feeds on a variety of meaty foods including frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and high-quality marine pellets. Regular feeding 1-2 times daily is ideal.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territories.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. No special lighting needs.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef conditions is preferred.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock with crevices and caves for hiding and resting. This helps reduce stress and allows natural behaviours.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (approximately 8 inches) in length.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While generally reef safe, they may prey on small invertebrates and crustaceans.
