Cheilinus oxycephalus, commonly referred to as the Humphead Wrasse, is a large and visually impressive marine fish prized by advanced hobbyists. This species is notable for its distinctive forehead hump and vibrant colouration, making it a captivating centrepiece in a suitably sized marine aquarium.
Care Level: Due to its size and specific needs, the Humphead Wrasse is recommended for experienced marine aquarists. It requires a large tank with stable water parameters and a varied diet.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally semi-aggressive, Cheilinus oxycephalus can coexist with other large, robust fish but may show territorial behaviour. Avoid housing with very small or timid species to prevent stress or predation.
Diet: This wrasse is carnivorous, feeding primarily on molluscs, crustaceans, and other meaty marine fare. A diet including high-quality frozen or live foods such as shrimp, squid, and specialised wrasse pellets is recommended to maintain health and vibrant colours.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 500 litres is advised to accommodate its large adult size and active swimming behaviour. Provide ample live rock for hiding and foraging, along with open swimming areas.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Reef Safety: With Caution – While not typically reef safe due to potential predation on invertebrates and smaller fish, some experienced keepers may maintain them in fish-only or fish-dominant systems.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 60 cm in captivity.
