Bodianus diana, or Diana’s Hogfish, is a beautifully coloured wrasse native to the Indo-Pacific region. This species is prized for its striking appearance and dynamic behaviour, making it a popular choice among experienced marine aquarists.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Bodianus diana requires stable water conditions and a well-maintained environment.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally semi-aggressive. It can be territorial, especially towards similar-sized wrasses or smaller, more passive fish. Best housed with robust tank mates that can hold their own. Avoid keeping with very small or timid species.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including high-quality frozen or live meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and specialised marine pellets to ensure optimal health.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef currents is ideal to keep the fish comfortable and active.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for hiding and establishing territories. Ensure secure lids as wrasses are known jumpers.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 25 cm (10 inches) in length.
Reef Safety: With Caution. May prey on small invertebrates and crustaceans, so not recommended for delicate reef tanks with small ornamental invertebrates.
