The Bodianus axillaris, commonly called the Axilspot Hogfish, is a visually stunning wrasse prized for its vibrant colouration and active behaviour. This extra large specimen is ideal for experienced marine aquarists with spacious tanks.
Care Level: Moderate care is required to maintain water quality and provide a suitable environment.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or in a large, well-structured aquarium to reduce aggression.
Diet: Carnivorous; feeds on a variety of meaty foods including crustaceans, molluscs, and prepared frozen foods. Regular feeding with high-quality marine carnivore diets is recommended.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 250 litres (approximately 65 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and territories.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While generally reef safe, they may prey on small invertebrates such as shrimps and crabs.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for hiding and grazing. Ensure the aquarium has secure lids as wrasses are known jumpers.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in captivity.
