Anampses geographicus, commonly known as the Geographic Wrasse, is a striking addition to marine aquariums, prized for its vibrant colours and active behaviour. This species is best suited to experienced hobbyists who can provide stable water conditions and a suitably sized tank.
Care Level: Moderate. Requires stable water parameters and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but may show territorial behaviour towards conspecifics or similar species.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including high-quality frozen or live meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Supplement with marine pellets or flakes formulated for wrasses.
Minimum Tank Size: 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and territory.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef lighting and moderate water flow are suitable. Avoid overly strong currents that may stress the fish.
Placement: Mid to lower levels of the aquarium. Provide plenty of live rock for hiding and foraging.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. Generally compatible with reef tanks but may prey on small invertebrates such as shrimp or small crabs.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (8 inches).
Ensure the aquarium is well-cycled with stable water parameters: temperature 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4. Regular water changes and monitoring are essential for optimal health.
