Hemitaurichthys zoster, commonly known as the Spotted Butterflyfish, is a visually captivating addition to any marine aquarium. This medium-sized species is renowned for its peaceful temperament and distinctive spotted pattern, making it a popular choice among hobbyists seeking a striking yet compatible reef fish.
Temperament and Compatibility: The Spotted Butterflyfish is generally peaceful and best kept in groups or pairs to mimic its natural schooling behaviour. It coexists well with other non-aggressive species but should not be housed with overly territorial or predatory fish.
Diet: This species thrives on a varied diet consisting of marine algae, plankton, and high-quality prepared foods such as mysis shrimp and specialised butterflyfish pellets. Regular feeding 2-3 times daily is recommended to maintain optimal health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 120 litres is advised to provide ample swimming space. Stable water parameters with a temperature range of 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, and salinity of 1.023-1.025 are essential. Moderate water flow and lighting conditions suitable for reef environments support the wellbeing of this species.
Reef Compatibility: Hemitaurichthys zoster is considered reef safe and can be kept with corals and invertebrates without risk of predation or damage.
Origin and Size: Native to the Indo-Pacific region, this butterflyfish reaches a maximum size of approximately 15 cm in captivity.
