Chaetodon paucifasciatus, commonly known as the Chevron Butterflyfish, is a visually captivating species prized for its bold chevron markings and vibrant colours. This small butterflyfish is best suited to experienced marine aquarists due to its specialised care needs.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water parameters and a mature aquarium.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in larger tanks.
Diet: Omnivorous. In the aquarium, provide a varied diet including high-quality frozen mysis, brine shrimp, marine algae, and specialised prepared foods designed for butterflyfish. Supplement with live or frozen coral polyps and small invertebrates if possible.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 150 litres (40 gallons) recommended to provide ample swimming space and territories.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. May nip at coral polyps and sessile invertebrates, so reef tanks should be monitored carefully.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef lighting and moderate water flow are suitable. Ensure stable water quality with regular maintenance.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Avoid overcrowding with aggressive or very territorial species.
Origin: Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
Maximum Size: Up to 15 cm (6 inches) in length.
With proper care, the Chevron Butterflyfish can be a stunning and rewarding addition to a well-established marine aquarium.
