The Chaetodon octofasciatus, commonly known as the Eightband Butterflyfish, is a visually captivating species prized for its bold black and white vertical bands and elegant swimming style. This small butterflyfish typically reaches up to 15cm in length, making it suitable for medium to large marine aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species is best suited for aquarists with some experience due to its specialised dietary needs and sensitivity to water quality.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. It coexists well with other non-aggressive tank mates.
Diet: Omnivorous. Requires a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised prepared foods formulated for butterflyfish. Supplement with algae-based foods to mimic natural feeding habits.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 150 litres is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and territory. The aquarium should be mature with plenty of live rock to offer grazing surfaces and hiding places.
Reef Compatibility: Yes, with caution. While generally reef safe, some individuals may nip at coral polyps or clam mantles. Monitor behaviour closely in reef setups.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, and salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
