Chaetodon kleinii, commonly known as the Kleins Butterflyfish, is a visually captivating species prized for its intricate pattern of yellow, black, and white markings. This small butterflyfish reaches a modest size, making it suitable for medium to large marine aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a mature aquarium environment.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair.
Diet: Omnivorous. In the aquarium, provide a varied diet including high-quality marine flakes, pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Supplement with live rock to encourage natural grazing on algae and small invertebrates.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and territory.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While not known to nip at corals, some butterflyfish may pick at sessile invertebrates or coral polyps. Monitor behaviour closely in reef setups.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 15 cm (6 inches).
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef lighting and moderate water flow are suitable. Ensure water quality is maintained with regular testing and stable parameters.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Avoid aggressive tank mates and overcrowding.
