Spirobranchus spp. are marine polychaete tube worms commonly found in reef environments. This specimen is sourced from Australia and comes attached to live rock, offered in a substantial XXXL size, making it a striking addition to mature reef aquariums.
These tube worms are filter feeders, extending their colourful radioles to capture plankton and suspended organic particles from the water column. Their unique appearance and behaviour add dynamic interest to reef displays.
Care and Husbandry
- Lighting: Moderate lighting is recommended to maintain healthy growth without stressing the worm.
- Water Flow: Moderate to strong water flow is ideal to ensure adequate delivery of food particles and to keep detritus from settling on the tubes.
- Placement: Position on stable live rock in an area with good water circulation but protected from direct strong currents that may damage the delicate radioles.
- Feeding: While they can capture natural plankton and detritus, supplemental feeding with phytoplankton or finely powdered marine foods can support optimal health.
- Compatibility: Reef safe with caution; avoid housing with aggressive coral species or fish that may nip at the radioles.
Due to their size and specific care requirements, Spirobranchus spp. are best suited to experienced aquarists with established reef systems.
