Alpheus armatus is a species of snapping shrimp prized in the marine aquarium hobby for its intriguing behaviour and striking appearance. This shrimp is known for its enlarged claw that produces a snapping sound used for communication and defence.
Feeding: Alpheus armatus is primarily carnivorous and scavenges for small invertebrates and detritus. In captivity, it should be offered a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised invertebrate pellets to ensure optimal health.
Compatibility: This species is generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. It is considered reef safe with caution, as it may prey on very small or slow-moving invertebrates. Avoid housing with very small or delicate shrimp and crabs.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 30 litres is recommended to provide sufficient space and stable water conditions. Provide plenty of live rock and hiding places to mimic its natural habitat and reduce stress.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025, and moderate water flow.
Placement: Place Alpheus armatus in areas with ample crevices and rockwork where it can establish a territory and forage safely.
With proper care, Alpheus armatus can be a captivating addition to a marine reef aquarium, offering natural behaviour and ecological interest.
